Dilla AKA J-Dilla AKA Jay Dee has been a staple in hip hop since the Detroit-born producer/MC first stepped on the scene in the mid 1990's. He produced memorable tracks for some of the best loved hip hop artists of all time: A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, Common, The Roots, as well as producing and rapping in his own respected rap group, Slum Village. He was more than just a beat maker/producer, he created a style and sound within the confounds of the hip hop soundscape that was uniquely his. When you hear a Dilla track, you know it's a Dilla track. Whether it's the way the drums swing in and out of time or his ad-libbed background shout outs, Dilla's style is something that will be missed in hip hop. In February 2006, Dilla passed away from the blood disease TTP. While his music will always be with us, he will be greatly missed. He left behind a large discography of amazing music.

I remember meeting Dilla for the first time, when he and his mother, Mrs. Yancey, were in Stussy LA. I don't usually get all gas'd up for meeting people, but Dilla's music changed my life. Not in an overly dramatic way, but it all goes back to this remix he did for a British trip hop group called CRUSTATION. It's one of my favorite songs/remixes of all time. Slow, moody with hard hitting drums and melodic female vocals. It was everything I wanted to do, myself as a music producer, but will never, ever, ever come close. I felt the need to tell him that he did one of my favorite remixes of all time. He laughed, smiled and was like, "Damn, that's taking it back." It's one of those songs, that unless you were into that kind of music, you would've missed out on it.

On Saturday, April 14, 2007, Stussy is releasing our Dilla tee with some of the proceeds going to his foundation. The t-shirt, produced with BBE Records, celebrates Dilla's album, "The Shining", which was released last year.
